What is Umbanda?

Umbanda is a monotheistic Brazilian religion that blends elements from African, Indigenous, Spiritism and Catholic traditions. It centers on the belief in one supreme God and recognizes a variety of spiritual entities, including orixás (powerful spirits linked to forces of nature) and guia espirituais (spiritual guides), who are called upon for guidance, healing, and protection.

Each type of spirit has its unique qualities: for example, caboclos are Indigenous spirits known for their wisdom and connection to nature, while pretos-velhos are the spirits of ancestors who endured slavery, bringing a sense of resilience and compassion. Practitioners communicate with these spirits during rituals called giras, which involve music, drumming, and singing.

Umbanda places strong emphasis on respect for nature, moral conduct, and the well-being of the community. It’s a faith that’s both spiritual and communal, aiming to foster harmony, healing, and personal growth for everyone involved.
